Over three million people survive in the world on less than two dollars per day.
Fundación Fuerte of Grupo el Fuerte, whose aim is cooperating in solving the problems of its social surroundings, held a lecture at hotel el Fuerte in Marbella, named “Is development possible in the Third World?, given by Francisco Domínguez, expert on Non- Governmental Organisations for development. One of the conclusions was that apart from the ‘international development’ there are more than 3 million people surviving in the world on less than two dollars a day, a larger amount than sixty years ago.

During the first part of the lecture the arisen and evolution of the ‘international development’ concept was discussed, at first seen as a process through which “underdeveloped” countries could reach the industrialised world thanks to the help of the latter. The lecturer pointed out the evil aspects of development which make the life and situation of poorer ones even worse. The lecture was illustrated with real cases explaining how the effects of development make the life and situation of the intended beneficiaries even worse, such as the forced displacement of thousand and even million of people in the South countries for the sake of big projects. According to Francisco Domínguez, “it is estimated that more than ten million people displace each year in the world for the construction of big infrastructure works. Development is rather contradictory at times since instead of eliminating poverty, this gets worse very often”.
Another important part of the lecture was the official aid for development. “Such official aid has many times been very criticized due to the supposed wasting, but without such aid, poorer countries would be even in worse conditions”, outlined Domínguez. The result, however, “is more positive when we talk about little and non-governmental aid aimed to assist suffering poor and marginal people”, explained the lecturer.
As Francisco Domínguez states, “the benefits of some development activities are undeniable, and the resources used continue to grow as life span, literacy, or access to drinkable water in the South countries, do”. He finished by saying that the works carried out by non-governmental organisations are “very important in this process since they are very closed to the real problems of the least favoured people and to the third world citizens, and they know at first hand the destination of the contributions to help those countries and persons”.
